Conservation Week

Conservation Week 2009: 13 - 20 September

Mark your calendars for Conservation Week 2009 and look out for ways to be inspired, take action and enjoy New Zealand’s wildlife and wild places.

Conservation Week 2008 was from 7-14 September. Throughout the week DOC, TVNZ Family on TVNZ 6 and community conservation groups encouraged New Zealanders to get out to Meet the Locals, Tutakitia te Iwi Kainga. We organised events and activities to help New Zealanders learn about our natural landscapes, native species, people and historic places.

Conservation Week is over for this year but everyday is a chance to Meet the Locals in your region. You can plant native trees in your backyard to see what birdlife will pay you a visit, or go for a day walk in your local park, track, or reserve with family and friends, or try exploring the rock pools at your nearest beach to see what lives there. There are heaps of ways for you to get up close and personal to the wildlife and wild places near you.

For inspiration you can watch videos from the Meet the Locals series, read our factsheets to find out what you could see in your region and complete activities from our education units, then check out the easy trip options near you and get out to Meet the Locals!
